The bulk of the 25th Brigade arrive at Kokoda, many in poor condition after their ordeal over the past weeks along the Track. Brigadier Ken Eather immediately makes plans for supply drops and orders the airstrip repaired so supply planes can land.
The Japanese have withdrawn to near Oivi, down the Kokoda-Wairopi road, where Gen Horii had deployed him men with their backs to the Kumisi River, a move that astonishes the Australians.
The Diggers at Kokoda find bodies of the dead and dying enemy troops in their abandoned field hospital. Those unable to walk, or lacking the strength to suicide, had been shot in their stretchers.
