6 november 1942

The first full day of the battle for Oivi as the Australians try to break into the Japanese positions but can neither break into the well established defences nor find a way around their flanks.

The 2/1st, 2/2nd, 2/3rd & 3rd Battalions are in contact and lose 17 killed and 36 wounded on the day. Among the dead is Cpl Lester ‘Tarzan’ Pett, hero of the battle for Eora Creek, who dies of wounds received a day earlier.

The Diggers quickly learn that the wide Japanese perimeter means frontal assaults are too costly and ineffective.
