2 December 1942

The exhausted Diggers try to launch further attacks on the Japanese positions at Gona but their condition and their losses from previous assaults prevent any full-scale attacks.

Most of their time is taken in dangerous rescues of wounded mates who have spent the night in agony in exposed positions. During the night Cpl Bill McMahon and Pe Ernie Yeing swam across Gona Creek and found and Capt John O'Neill, still alive but mortally wounded. They made a rough raft from logs and floated him back to their lines.
