After Midway Battle, carrier USS Yorktown still afloat, listing heavily and on fire, towed by minesweeper USS Vireo. At first light destroyer USS Hammann puts a salvage party aboard Yorktown.

Meanwhile Jap sub I-168 penetrates escort screen of cruisers and destroyers & hits USS Hammann with 4 torpedoes, which sinks in 4 minutes (84 killed, 104 survivors including 72 wounded rescued).

USS Yorktown remains afloat but salvage party evacuates and US destroyers counterattack sub, dropping 40 depth charges damaging her & forcing her to escape back to Japan.

Almost 1000km west of Midway US recce planes find Jap ships & 3 waves of dive bombers sink cruiser Mikuma and damage others.
