During night Jap subs shell Sydney and Newcastle. Around midnight I-24 surfaces 15km SE of Sydney & fires 10 unsuccessful rounds at Harbour Bridge.

Coastal artillery returns fire forcing sub to dive but 9 shells from sub hit eastern suburbs causing minor injuries, 1 demolishes house. Shelling causes widespread panic mid invasion fears and some flee the city.

Around same time I-21 shells Newcastle from 10km firing 34 shells BHP steelworks. Only 1 explodes damaging a house and a dud hits a tram terminus. Only time Australian land fortifications fire on an enemy warship.
