2 December 1942

The exhausted Diggers try to launch further attacks on the Japanese positions at Gona but their condition and their losses from previous assaults prevent any full-scale attacks.

Most of their time is taken by dangerous rescues of wounded mates who have spent the night in agony in exposed positions. During the night Cpl Bill McMahon and Private Ernie Yeing swim across Gona Creek and find Capt John O'Neill, still alive but mortally wounded. They make a rough raft from logs and float him back to their lines.
